U.S. Ambassador Opens University of Nizwa American Corner

February 5, 2013

On February 5, U.S. Ambassador Greta Holtz travelled to Nizwa for the grand opening of the University of Nizwa American Corner, the first new American Corner to open in Oman since 2005.  During her visit to Nizwa, Ambassador Holtz and a delegation from the U.S. Embassy were welcomed by Chancellor Dr. Ahmed Al-Rawahi and other high-level officials from the University, who also invited the visitors on a tour of the campus.  The new American Corner represents the highest standards in technology and innovation, with iPads, laptop computers, interactive English-language learning tools, and games, in addition to other educational resources.  The Corner opening was celebrated by over 100 students, faculty, and staff, followed by a luncheon with U.S. Embassy exchange program alumni from the Nizwa region.   “We hope that many students, faculty, and members of the community from Nizwa will be able to benefit from the new American Corner,” said Ambassador Holtz.  “I am delighted to open this American Corner at the University of Nizwa, which has been educational leader in Oman with a global perspective since its founding.”

The American Corners program is a partnership between the U.S. Embassy and higher educational institutions in Oman to further English-language learning and intercultural exchange.  The American Corner at the University of Nizwa is the sixth American Corner in the Sultanate, joining the American Corners at the College of Applied Sciences in Al Rustaq, Sohar University, Buraimi University College, the Higher College of Technology, and the Modern College of Business and Science.
