Together with our partners, the National Basketball Association (NBA) and Basketball Aid e.V., a Berlin-based non-profit organization, the U.S. Embassy Berlin and the U.S. Consulate Munich organized basketball camps bringing together local youth and unaccompanied refugee minors in an exciting training session with former NBA-coach Neal Meyer. The participants not only experienced an intensive training exercise but also learned a lot about respect and diversity in sports. The event was supported by the Integration Commisioner of the Bavarian government.

Three participants of each clinic won the opportunity to go to the game Dallas Maverick vs. Alba Berlin and meet with NBA-legends Detlef Schremp, Chris Kaman and – of course – Dirk Nowitzki. Julian, the winner from the Munich workshop was happy to meet his idols.

With nearly 300 participants, Consulate General Munich's American Citizen Information Day, July 21, was a great success.  Participants from across Bavaria came to the Consulate to talk to representatives from USCIS, the Social Security Administration, the IRS, the German Immigration office, the Overseas Vote Foundation, the Association of American University and Professional Women, the German American Women’s Club, the German American Business Club, the English speaking Entity Theater, Democrats Abroad, the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, and the Munich International Women’s Club.

Additionally, Consulate staff registered 35 people to vote, completed 10 passport renewal applications, and answered questions about citizenship, passports, and visas.

Participants appreciated the opportunity for face-to-face contact with government officials and the chance to learn about other local programs.   The government officials’ tables were the most subscribed, but perhaps the most popular station was the Marine Security Guard barbeque fundraiser featuring hamburgers, hotdogs, and American chips.

The 2012 success sets the foundation for a renewed annual event to take place around the same time each year, allowing Americans in the region to plan for and look forward to the event.
