Results

753,176 hectares under improved natural resource management

A hectare is equal to 2.47 acres or 10,000 square meters. “Improved management” includes activities that promote enhanced management of natural resources for the objective of conserving biodiversity in areas that are identified as biologically significant through national, regional, or global priority-setting processes.

136,444 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions reduced or sequestered

Greenhouse gases are those that can absorb and emit infrared radiation.  They are responsible for a steady increase in the Earth's average near surface temperature due to heat retention. These gases form a blanket around the earth that lets incoming sun rays pass through but blocks the reflected heat rays from going out into the space.  Reducing these emissions slows the pace of global warming.

36,148 professionals trained in natural resource management and/or biodiversity conservation

Natural resource management and biodiversity conservation training transfers knowledge, skills, or attitudes through structured learning and follow-up activities, or through less structured means, to solve problems or fill identified performance gaps. Training includes long-term academic degree programs, short or long-term nondegree technical courses in academic or in other settings, nonacademic seminars, workshops, on-the-job learning experiences, observational study tours, or distance learning exercises or interventions. Natural resource managementand biodiversity training is important for building local capacity and promoting sustainability.

31,162 professionals trained in global climate change topics

Topics under global climate change include the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change; national greenhouse gas inventories, national programs or policies to mitigate or adapt to global climate change; promotion of technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; promotion of public awareness efforts; activities to reduce the vulnerability to climate change impacts; activities to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from the land use sector; activities to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from the energy sector. Training activities support demonstration activities that strengthen in-country capacity, as well as promote strategic partnerships, education and outreach, technology cooperation and research.

24,431 people benefited economically from sustainable natural resource management and conservation
Economic benefits include: increased household income, number of new enterprises developed, as well as, benefits from ecosystem services. Economic benefits may be based on actual cash transactions or other economic value of natural resources.
21,959 stakeholders increased capacity to adapt to the impacts of climate change
There is strong scientific and evidence-based information that people involved in sectors such as agriculture, livestock, fishing and other areas of natural resources can mitigate the effects of climate change by using appropriate management or implement measures that reduce the risk of climate change.
3,304 hectares of biological significance and/or natural resources under improved natural resource management

Policies, laws, agreements and regulations include those formed and formally endorsed by government, non-government, civil society, and/or private sector stakeholders with the intent to strengthen sustainable natural resource management. Implementation is demonstrated by adequate institutional structure, capacity, and investment necessary to carry out changes. Strengthened environmental governance underpins sound natural resources management and ensures its sustainability.
704 laws, policies, strategies, plans, agreements, or regulations addressing climate change (mitigation or adaptation) and/or biodiversity conservation officially proposed, adopted, or implemented
The formal and informal institutional structures in the form of laws, policies, agreements, and regulations are essential aspects of many programs because they provide the enabling environment on which effective interventions are built and maintained.
