U.S. Consul General Robert Settje
Robert Settje, a career diplomat in the United States Foreign Service, became the U.S. Consul General to Bermuda in August 2012. His previous assignments include Vice Consul-Political/Economic Officer in Santo Domingo (1994-96), Co-Consular Chief in Munich (1997-2000), Deputy Consular Chief/Visa Chief in Naples (2000-03), Legal Advisor to the State Department Visa Office (2003-07), Career Development Officer in the State Department Human Resources Office (2007-09), Senior Civilian at Provincial Reconstruction Team Zabul, Afghanistan (2009-10), and Regional Consular Officer for embassies and consulates in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, and Europe (2010-12).
Immediately prior to joining the Foreign Service, Mr. Settje was a criminal prosecutor in Jefferson County, Colorado (1988-94), an associate attorney at Holland & Hart in Denver (1986-88), and a law clerk to the Honorable Joseph Quinn, Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court (1985-86). From 1979-82, he served as a police officer in Madison, Wisconsin, where, in addition to his patrol duties, he was a training officer and a member of the SWAT Team. He has a J.D. from Harvard (1985) and an A.B. in History cum laude from Carleton College (1976). He also did independent study at the Italian University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy (1977).
Mr. Settje and his wife Melanie Haroldson Settje have three adult children, Tasha, Jack, and Nick. Mr. Settje was born and raised in Corona, South Dakota.
