Ambassador Battle Interviews with ECHO Africa Magazine

Addis Ababa

An interview with United States Mission to the African Union (USAU) Ambassador Michael Battle and ECHO Africa Magazine editor Behailu Mihirete was printed in the January/February 2013 edition of the publication.  The interview features the Ambassador as he discusses his tenure in Addis, as U.S. Ambassador to the African Union, as well as his assessment of the status of the U.S-AU relationship.  During the interview, the two discussed many of Ambassador Battle’s personal accomplishments as well, including his involvement in the first election observer team in South Africa, following the end of apartheid and ushering in the election of Nelson Mandela.

During the one hour interview, Ambassador Battle discussed his experience in South Africa, along with what he felt to be his biggest accomplishment during his four years in Addis Ababa and working with the AU – helping to change the way American multilateral diplomacy is undertaken in the African context.  The Ambassador also detailed the essence of the USAU mission, which is to facilitate dialogue between the AU and the United States.  Further, the Ambassador discussed details of the U.S. partnership with the African continent overall and his general review of the AU over the past four years.

ECHO Africa Magazine is affiliated with the AU, UNECA and several other governmental and non-governmental organizations.  The magazine has readership in Ethiopia, South Africa, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania, Djibouti, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
