Supporting Small Businesses in the Transcarpathian Region
The summary below was provided by the Peace Corps Volunteer and the community administering this project.
Ukraine has a high unemployment rate, and this leads to many problems in the local communities. The Ukrainian partner organization in this project is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged groups in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. This organization provides job training for the unemployed, but this can only help to a limited degree when there are few jobs available locally. The organization plans to provide additional training and services focusing on small business to help the local economy grow and create more jobs.
Small businesses are vital to a vibrant local economy, but with the recent economic difficulties few businesses have been opening and existing businesses are having trouble remaining open. It can be difficult for these business owners to keep up with the details of a complicated legal and tax system. In can be even more challenging in the Transcarpathian region. This region is situated along the border to Hungary and a majority of the local population in some areas speaks primarily Hungarian. All of the information and legal documents regarding the regulations and tax code are only available in Ukrainian. The organization plans to provide training to local business owners to help them understand the details of the regulations and the tax code that impacts their businesses to help maintain and strengthen their businesses and support the local economy.
