Map of PERU

Many small rural towns in Peru are starting to construct sewer systems in order to improve the overall level of sanitation in the community. A common, recurring problem is that most of the residents of the town rarely connect their houses to the system and continue to use their old sanitation practices due to economic, social, or educational reasons. The town chosen for this project fits this description perfectly. A large percentage of the residents are still using their old latrines or are simply carrying their excrements in some sort of container and are than dumping them in the sewer system entrance box in front of their houses. This PCPP projects main objective is to educate 30 families on improving their sanitation practices as well as helping them to construct their own bathrooms that will be connected to the recently installed district sewer system. The educational portion of the project will focus on understanding the importance of hand washing as well as learning how to maintain a clean and sanitary bathroom. The actual bathrooms that will be constructed will include a toilet and sink that will be hooked directly up to district sewer system and the household water supply. PCPP funding will cover 50% of the bathroom costs while the other half will come in the form of materials and labor from each family. Each family will also be required to attend several education sessions and will have to demonstrate a sufficient understanding over the topics taught.
