The Primary School Library and Literacy Project began in early 2012 and aims to promote literacy by improving an existing hall to house the small library, making the library welcoming for students, improving library organization, and improving library skills of children and adults through Library Skills classes and a Literacy Camp (led by Library services of Fiji). The District School has an unused hall that needs renovation that they would like to refurbish into a library space and an adjoining meeting hall. The community (the subsistence farming villages near the school from which the students are drawn) can provide some labor required for the project, local materials, meals for the laborers, minor furnishings such as mats and pillows, and the culturally important opening ceremony. The requested funding from the Peace Corps Partnership Program will supply renovation materials (such as cement, paint, nails, window frames and wood) and the labor cost for the skilled carpenter who will supervise and manage the work. Additional contribution will come in early 2013 from Library Services of Fiji for used library books, library furnishings (such as a librarian desk, bookshelves and benches), and assistance in hosting a Literacy Camp during the first school term break in 2013.
