The Tri-City Herald reported that batteries for renewable energy storage that researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory helped develop will be commercialized in Western Washington. The panelists had hypothetical conversations with President Obama and presidential candidate Romney on why the U.S. should mine the moon. Yahoo! News, and other various websites, posted a news release announcing the Lithium Battery Power 2012 conference, which will run Dec. 4-5 in Las Vegas, and mentions that PNNL's Jason Zhang will be a presenter. 09.11.12

Northwest Public Radio’s Courtney Flatt, Fierce Energy, Energy Central and other news outlets reported on PNNL research that found light-emitting diode light bulbs are more environmentally friendly than compact fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. 09.07.12

DOE's Energy Blog cited PNNL research that found 17 percent of U.S. oil imports for transportation could be replaced with U.S.-grown algae in a post about algal biofuel. The Capital Research Center, a think tank that examines the "politics of nonprofits," cited a different aspect of this research, which also found that U.S.-grown algae for biofuel production would require land about the size of South Carolina and about 25 percent of U.S water currently being used for crop irrigation in a column critical of algal biofuel. 09.05.12

The Oregonian's Scott Learn reported on PNNL research that found light-emitting diode light bulbs are more environmentally friendly than compact fluorescent and incandescent bulbs. Greenwire reposted the story. 09.05.12

The Sequim Gazette and Peninsula Daily news published stories on Battelle's decision to decline to be annexed into the City of Sequim and remain in Clallam County. The MSL is currently adequately served by its existing sewer and water resources, and annexation would require a significant financial investment on Battelle's part to help the city extend its utilities to the MSL property. 08.29.12

Reuters and various news websites reposted a news release that stated PNNL will present at LEDs 2012, a conference that examines the future of LED lighting and runs Oct. 10-12 in San Diego. 08.23.12

Biomass Magazine's Luke Geiver quoted PNNL's Mike Lilga in a story about the equipment that biomass and biofuels researchers use. 08.22.12

Earth2Tech quoted PNNL’s Gary Gill and Greenwire mentioned PNNL in separate stories about PNNL-ORNL research to test an improved method to extract uranium from seawater to fuel nuclear power plants. EIN Presswire, PhysOrg, R&D Magazine, Washington Clean Technology Alliance and others reposted a PNNL news release on the subject. The American Chemical Society and ORNL also mentioned PNNL in their own news releases on the subject.  08.21.12

The Tri-City Herald included mention of PNNL in its weekly Monday "Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down" column for "once again developing cutting-edge technology that continues to amaze." The reference was to last week's announcement that PNNL is receiving $1 million from DOE to continue research that replaces metal in vehicle's with lightweight materials reinforced with carbon fibers. 08.20.12

eSource Blog's Mary Horsey reported on a talk by PNNL's Jim Dirks about measuring miscellaneous electric loads on building energy usage during the Summer Study on Energy Efficiency in Buildings, which was organized by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. 08.17.12

Chron and Reuters reported that former PNNL bio-based chemical researcher Todd Werpy has been appointed vice president of research and development at Archer Daniels Midland. 08.16.12

DOE will fund seven new projects designed to speed up the development of materials for next-generation vehicles. PNNL leads one project and is partnering in another. More> 08.15.12

Oregon Public Broadcasting did a story on the Army's Net-Zero Water program and efforts to reduce water usage at Oregon's Camp Rilea. The reporter spoke with PNNL water efficiency engineer Kate McMordie for the story. 08.15.12

R&D Magazine featured an article about PNNL's recent R&D 100 Award technology that scrubs CO2 from submarine environments. The Advanced Carbon Dioxide Removal Unit (ACRU) uses a granular version of self-assembled monolayers on mesoporous supports (SAMMS) technology developed by PNNL in the 1990s. 08.14.12

The Tri-City Herald announced that PNNL scientist Langdon Holton will be included in Energy Secretary Chu's group of technical experts who will take a fresh look at Hanford's Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant and its black cells and provide input.

Washington Green Tech blog reported that Mulkiteo, Wash., energy storage developer UniEnergy Technologies, which licensed battery technologies developed at PNNL, recently met with a delegation from Liaoning Province, China, "to foster collaboration between the two economic areas on the development and commercialization of clean technology including advanced energy storage."

Biofuels Digest' Jim Lane reported that PNNL biofuels research partner LanzaTech and nylon producer INVISTA have signed a joint development agreement to convert industrial waste gas carbon monoxide into butadiene. PNNL and LanzaTech have already developed a thermochemical conversion that makes butadiene out of 2, 3-butanediol. 08.13.12

ZDnet reported that PNNL is working with FuelCell Energy to develop hybrid solid oxide fuel cell battery systems that can run the Navy's unmanned undersea vehicles. 08.13.12

Science blog BoingBoing included a story titled "What's wrong with the American grid," that points out while there are problems with the American electrical grid, a blackout of the severity seen in India recently is highly unlikely in this country. Two PNNL staff were interviewed for the story, and comments provided by the staff were used to explain how the U.S. grid works in other BoingBoing stories on the India blackout. 08.03.12

Power Magazine featured PNNL's super-efficient small solid oxide fuel cell system and quoted PNNL's Vincent Sprenkle in a story about major developments in solid oxide fuel cells. 08.01.12

Core Technologies blog reported on a super-efficient, small-scale solid oxide fuel cell system developed by PNNL. 07.30.12

CleanTechnica cited a 2010 PNNL report that estimated a smart electrical power grid could decrease annual electric energy use and utility sector carbon emissions at least 12 percent by 2030. 07.27.12

FuelCellToday, the Hartford Courant and the Hartford Business Journal reported that PNNL is part of a team working with Connecticut company FuelCell Energy to develop a hybrid solid oxide fuel cell battery power system for large unmanned underwater vehicles for the U.S. Navy. FuelCell Energy put out a news release announcing funding for the project. 07.27.12

Tri-City Herald and Energy Central reported that PNNL is receiving $1 million from DOE to research a new material that could extend the lifetime of nuclear fuel, reducing the cost of electricity production. 07.20.12

Local Tri-Cities media covered a story on an Irvine, Calif.-based company, Kurion, that is moving to the Tri-Cities. Kurion will use PNNL to test the viability of Kurion's new vitrification system. Kurion recently purchased the company Geosafe, which is based on a PNNL in situ vitrification technology developed at the laboratory in the 1980s. 07.19.12

Green Car Congress, Lab Manager Magazine, Pennsylvania Business Central and Power Engineering Magazine reported that PNNL is one of the recipients of $13 million in new DOE funding to research nuclear energy technologies. PNNL will work with Pennsylvania State University to "assess instruments that allow operators to better monitor changes in nuclear reactor material properties." 07.18.12
