Innovation Advisors Program

ORISE providing support to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ Innovation Advisors Program

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is partnering with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to support its recently-launched Innovation Advisors Program, a new initiative designed to advance three CMS program measures—better health, better care and lower costs through improvement across the country. The program has selected 73 individuals from 27 states and the District of Columbia for its first cohort of advisors.

The Innovation Advisors Program is designed to broadly help health care providers refine, apply and sustain managerial and technical skills necessary to drive delivery system reform for the benefit of Medicare, Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) beneficiaries. Each advisor is conducting a local or regional project designed to advance the three program measures.

“We’re looking to these innovation advisors to be our partners—we want them to discover and generate new ideas that will work and help us bring them to every corner of the United States,” said CMS Innovation Center Director Rick Gilfillan, M.D.

The 73 individuals in the first cohort of the Innovations Advisors Program were selected from a pool of more than 900 applicants. In the first year of the program, 200 advisors will be selected for the program. The first group of Innovation Advisors began their six-month, intensive orientation and applied research period in January 2012.

ORISE is providing outreach, recruitment, training, mentoring and other support. The learning components include face-to-face and Webinar-based sessions, frequent consultation with mentors and CMS staff with expertise in innovation health care delivery systems, and networking with others who are leading change initiatives. These activities are designed to build the advisors’ skills and assist in the integration of the advisors’ system improvement projects.

ORISE is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities for the U.S. Department of Energy.
