The USAISR is one of six research laboratories within the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). The institute is the U.S. Army's lead research laboratory for improving the care of combat casualties.

Its mission is to provide requirements driven combat casualty care medical solutions and products for injured soldiers from self –aid through definitive care across the full spectrum of military operations. Additionally it provides state-of-the-art burn, trauma, and critical care to DoD beneficiaries around the world.
