Statement on President's Gun Proposal

Jan 17, 2013 Issues: Homeland Security

WASHINGTON – Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. (R-Tenn.) issued the following statement Wednesday in response to President Obama's gun control announcement:

As much as some people hate to admit it, guns have prevented many thousands of crimes and saved untold lives.  Going after law-abiding gun owners does nothing to prevent the acts of criminals and deranged persons.  Almost every mass or school shooter since the 1980s has been from a father absent household or on some sort of behavior drug.  We should be more focused on getting to the root of the problem, such as  violence in the entertainment industry, better recognition of mental health problems, and better security in schools.
