Seeking Freedom: Father George Dunne
George Dunne has been a Catholic priest since 1982. He came to Chicago from Dublin, Ireland for a one year sabbatical in 2000, but after traveling to Florida during the chilly Chicago winter he fell in love with the people and the country.
A Catholic priest for nearly 30 years, Father George Dunne fell in love with the U.S. during a sabbatical from his home country of Ireland.
Father Dunne has been a priest at the same Winter Springs, Florida parish for 10 years. The Diocese of Orlando helped him apply for work visas, a green card, and this last step - U.S. citizenship. When asked why he decided to apply for citizenship, he said that he had "connected here - with the people, with the country."
He was naturalized at a special Independence Day ceremony at the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando, Floriday on July 1. He said that Independence Day is about "seeking freedom. It is at the heart of the U.S. story." His parish is having a big July 4 celebration for him on Sunday. It will be a very special day for them all - it will be the first time that he will be able to say the Pledge of Allegiance with the parishioners.

I'm feeling grateful to read this article it was great step by Father Dunne. He spent much time and energy combating prejudice like writing articles, making speeches and taking part in numerous civil rights demonstrations.
This country has a serious flaw in immigration policy. This entire country is made up of immigrants yet now we don't allow most people to stay longer than 90 days. When most of them apply for an extension they are denied. I'm not sure I understand why we are trying to close our borders in such a way. Most of the immigrants that I have run into are far more hardworking than the US Citizens happy to continue their unemployment benefits while "illegals" are working 3 jobs to pay the rent... Let's think about that...How to people that barely speak the language hold down 3 jobs when we won't get off our rears for 1? Give them a path to stay. Let them pay taxes to pay for the coming healthcare debacle that is passed for those again too content to collect their handouts...
Congrats Father George!
This kind of article is very indeed a perfect to read. You will be given much more to enlighten your mind. A kind that is worth wasting our time for. A warm Congratulation for Father George Dunne!
Congrats Father Dunne! You really deserve the award. Nothing could ever be deserving than you. I love your book by the way.
Congratulations father!
I can relate to your story with my parents; they both immigrated from Poland and fell in love with the country also. I remember how happy they where when they became citizens.
All the best with your new status as an American citizen.
Welcome citizen Dunne...welcome
Congrats Father George!
Stopping people coming to and staying in America is a backwards step, even people with a business or not allowed to renew if they are deemed not to have made enough profit.Jobs From Home | Not Origami Money
This country has given the essence of independence, ie independence of residents in selecting and determining principle in the religious life, politics, and his life. Congratulation. Thanks

I maybe too late but still congratulations Father.
I think it is nice to see someone get the status they are seeking here in this great country. However, there are problems with our system. I have seen illegal immigrants living here off of our tax dollars, with zero contribution to our society. I have also seen illegal immigrants living here who cannot do enough. Some say that immigrants take our jobs away from Americans - especially in these difficult economic time - but I do not agree with this argument. There are plenty of lazy Americans too, and I believe that anyone with initiative can achieve miraculous results. One more thing... I know what it likes to be an immigrant, I lived in South America and experienced first hand what it feels like!
There are many illegal immigrants and those aliens that live here without papers. And eventually got their citizenship through marrying.
Happy for you Father. God is with you. And words be flowed out.
Nice place Father. Anyone would fall in love with such nice place and people. Have great future ahead.
