Did You Know? USCIS Forms and InfoPass Appointments are Free

All too often, free services offered by USCIS are sold to unsuspecting individuals by those seeking to make a quick profit. This is frequently true of forms and InfoPass appointments.

You can download USCIS forms for free on our website. You may also order hard copies by mail free of charge.

Scheduling an InfoPass appointment is also free and you can do so online in a dozen languages.

Don’t be taken advantage of by predators looking to make a quick buck at your expense. When in doubt, check our website for more information on these and other USCIS services.

Sir,

I once took an InfoPass appointment in 2007 at the Chicago Immigraton office but this visit did not help me at all. Though the people at the counter are polite to speak to, it is possible on complicated issues they cannot answer your question. So ultimately I returned back not satisfied with my visit with the feeling that I should have been directed to someone who could have advised me better.

However, I agree sometimes our questions are quite complex. When we don't understand the laws very well we tend to lose on benefits that very law provides. Example, my husband worked as Radio Officer in shipping companies for 20 years. When the job became obsolete, he had to go back to school to upgrade his skills and joined a community college here as F1 student. He didn't know that post Associate Degree he could do upto one year CPT while continuing his undergraduate education. He opted for OPT and was issued a EAD from August 2007 to July 2008. In the interim period the 17 months extension was announced and he didn't know whether he could apply for extension. On OPT he worked with qualified engineers in Baxter though his degree was an Associate degree because he passed their interview and tests because he actually had 20 years working experience in the technical field. The same problem arises where an H1B is concerned because he does not have a bachelor's degree. He went back to school to complete his transfer courses to pursue a dual degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and his current GPA is 3.87.In short, what is the use of having skilled expertise in the STEM field when you cannot get a job just because you don't have a paper degree in hand?

I truly hope someone in the USCIS will address these kind of issues too. Right now, we can see they are doing a good job steamlining the whole immigration process - a real beacon of hope.

Never heard of any stories, but good to know that people charge for something that USCIS provides for free.

BTW, it would be helpful for the readers, if you start a thread to answer questions related to EAD renewals and associated delays. That is kind of a hot topic these days, and the delays directly affects a person's current employment situation. So, please consider starting a thread.

Thanks!!!

I took an InfoPass appointment a few week ago. The representative was very nice, but couldn’t answer my questions and told me that I had to take up the matter with his manager, who was absent at that time and no one actually knew for how long. And the cherry on top was that the system was down – there were several people trying to wait it out. All that didn’t come as a surprise, unfortunately. Yours life-long fan, also unfortunately. EB3 ROW.

I ahve used the InfoPass appointment many times and I never got my questions answered. They always give the same answer "We do not have any information on this case. You will have to wait". I am not sure I do understand what their job is since they give this answer to every one. They get paid from our tax money and they do not provide any useful information on a case.
InfoPass appointments are unafficient and unfortunately the only service that Field office provide.
You should think of how to improve it or just dismiss these services.

There are some shady companies that try to make a quick buck. A bunch of companies that charged money for entries in the visa lottery were shut down a few years ago.
And I have seen advertisements from some company trying to get people to pay money for GC renewals.

Did you Know that USCIS Officer at counter treat the Immigrants very rude (i.e. Tampa Office)???? Did you know that after more that 30 min. waiting, the USCIS officer yells at you and make a scene and tells you that he cannot do anything (i.e. Tampa Office... again).

@ USCIS Blog Team

Yes, I am aware that these services are free.

I notice there is minimal feedback from the USCIS Blog Team on here. Remember Communication is a two way process. So, please offer some answers to the questions that many individuals ask here on the Beacon.

Can the Blog team please explain the (Pending Employment-Based I-485 Inventory), specifically r/t EB3 "All Other Chargeability."

From my understanding, and please correct me if I am misinformed, the current cut-off date for this category is Jun,22 '03, which implies that the Visa Office issued visa numbers to individuals up until that date. Therefore no individuals after the cut-off date with a later priority date could be issued a visa number for his/her Green Card.

Now, if I look at the "Pending Employment-Based I-485 Inventory" tables posted on this site by USCIS, how do you explain that the pending I-485 cases are decreasing in 2004, 2005, 2006,and 2007? Does this mean that people in EB3 have been issued Green Cards after the cut-off date?

I am familar with the "priority date" and the "cut-off" date, and the fact that the VO manages these numbers. Congress sets the number of employment based visas awarded ie 140,000, and each group gets a percentage of the visa numbers. So, in EB3 there should be 28.6% of the 140,000 which translates to about 40,040 visa numbers anually. Each country has a cap of 7%, I am from a country that traditionally seeks a small number of visa numbers each year, so how does USCIS explain these allocations after the cut-off date, and is there a fair distribution of visa numbers for "other chargeability" individuals?

These are the type of questions that the USCIS staff were not able to answer on my Infopass appointment.

Maybe I will get some clarification here.

Thank you.

I would suggest posting more important issues like delay in processing applications I765(EAD)or I131(Travel Document) than just posting a matter about free forms available which really does not help much for most immigrants.

USCIS,

You are credible only if you make all the I-140 approved cases to apply I-485, as soon as possible and issue EAD/AP, lot of people are waiting in the USA because of this. And you are not keen to give H1B extension to people who work and live here legally, even though they paid taxes for the past 10 to 14 years as Good as citizens. Please allow all I-140 approved cases to do Adjustment of STatus. You take law on your hands and play with the life of 1 million Legal immigrants. that is real ridiculous thing.

Really are you guys not shame on this fee hike?

We will be happily ready to pay increase in fee, but what do we get finally ??

Keep a dead line for your employee to process an application within 6 months, otherwise demote or fire them. Then, you can stream USCIS as world class organization. Otherwise go to hell for this fee rise.

These services are offered free of charge by USCIS, but they do cost money. To design all the forms and to maintain local offices where infopass appointments take place aren’t necessarily cheap.

Immigrants are effectively paying for these services through application fees.

But some are tricked into paying more, by falling prey to websites and individuals who somehow manage to sell them.

Although selling USCIS forms is not nearly on the same level as green lottery scams yet, it is still troublesome.

Anything that can speed up ingress and egress
to Haiti would be appreciated.

There are a number of General Aviation Groups that flew missions of mercy during the Haiti Disaster and are still flying them.

Operation Teacup pilots were some of the first on the scene as they were during Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Ike and Gustav.

Operation Teacup is a group of over 10,236 volunteer aircraft owners and pilots who have volunteered their skills and paid
their own expenses, averaging over
$1,500 per trip and have flown
tens of thousands of miles.

http://operation-teacup.scieron.com/haiti.htm

The group was organized during Hurricane Katrina by Baldy Ivy
of http://www.pilotsharetheride.com
and Fred Quarles, both long time
pilots.

Bahamas Habitat and Agape Flights
have worked together to deliver over 300,000 pounds of food, tents
and building supplies. Angel Flights also participated.

One Operation Teacup pilot flew
multiple planeloads of water filters from California to provide
a small community with safe drinking water.

Congress has passed a resolution commending the general aviation pilots who have flown these missions.

The society always had opportunists who look for ways to make easy money, I doubt if we can change it with the computers and internet usage. It is common sense however, to investigate before you act and a lot of people fail to follow this basic method.

People without internet access and those with little knowledge of the process are the usual victims here.

We can't completely stop people who will go to lengths just to get a quick bucks but we can improve the local knowledge of our services

I was unaware that this was gong on. I'm glad to see this posted, and brought to the attention of the general public. It demonstrates how clever scam artists can be, and shows that people will do almost anything to make an easy buck. I also agree that people should attempt to first do some research before they pay for forms to see if they are available for free.

Education and getting the word out on services availability and where to access is the key. I noticed that a Google Search on "USCIS forms" brings up your website with links to forms to download at the very top (position #1) of the Google search results.

A search for "Infopass appointments" on Google brings up Make an Appointment (Infopass)- infopass.uscis.gov at the top of the Google Search results.

The issue with connecting with those that most need your services is ensuring those in need know what to search for, especially if English is not their first language.

There is two types of people who will get cheated. One is the lazy never ask (or search) type. Second, is the overly-smart-know-it-all people who thinks nothing is free in this world or "too-good-to-be-true" or "what's the catch?" type. When you offer them something for free, that's the perception they have on you.

How sad is it when people take advantage of others. I just heard today that 70% of the wealth in the United States is now controlled by 1% of the people. We are becoming part of a two (2) class society, the rich and the poor. I would venture to say that 95% of the rich obtained their wealth by taking advantage / scamming the middle class and poor. Selling USCIS forms that can be obtained free is just another example of a scam.

Some services the government provides require complex, elaborate applications, and the process of applying and completing forms justifies seeking the help of private companies which end up charging reasonable fees for assistance, however that does NOT seem like the case here. These USCIS forms are free and this government agency will assist you with anything you need help with.

It is extremely saddening to see legitimate online marketers get scrutinized due to the ill actions of a few predators and even though this may be a minor issue to some posters here, it is very important to many people who are looking to prevent their own reputation from being shammed by predators who take advantage of people in this way.

I agree that a lot of new immigrants have paid fees for these forms as their English is not good enough. They may have precious little money or even be completely flat broke. Taking advantage of people in this situation without helping them significantly is just wrong.

Thanks for the posts Some services the government provides require complex, elaborate applications, and the process of applying and completing forms justifies seeking the help of private companies which end up charging reasonable fees for assistance, however that does NOT seem like the case here. These USCIS forms are free and this government agency will assist you with anything you need help with. THanks again!

I think now the USCIS have increased the fees for application under various categories. One way or the other, since the forms are now not charged means it equates to the same thing.Anyway, it makes sense to keep them free.

Do you have to be a citizen of the US to make use of the USCIS forms?

@ performer5

You do not have to be a citizen to use USCIS forms.

They should be free as we want to encourage people to follow the rules and become citizens and not make it too hard of a process

They should be free but if the process could be expedited for a fee, it might be worth it to some.

It is a real shame that opportunistic people prey upon the people that often can least afford it. Grrrrhh. Thanks for all you guys are doing in helping people come to the country the right way.

@ Chicago jobs

This has nothing to do with the process - we are simply saying the forms themselves cost nothing to download or obtain. You can access them anytime for free on our site or by phone or mail. More at: http://www.uscis.gov/forms

It good to know you are looking after the people, making sure they are getting the online form to sign up for your programs. Yes there are alot of people on the net are trying to make profit on selling these forms. The best bet is to visit this website for more information.
