The Counterinsurgency Center hosted Mr.Rick Coplen of the Peackeeeping and Stability Operations Institute on 12 January.  The purpose of the presentation was to understand the economic development “operational environment” in Afghanistan.  Professor Coplen emphasized that a framework for analysis and decision-making were critical in this process, and that the framework would assist one in gaining critical insights about Afghanistan including economic development history and challenges, the causes of economic weaknesses, key actors and their goals.  Mr. Coplen presented a very useful model for transitioning to a strong sustainable host country economy.  The necessary conditions for this to occur include employment generation, macroeconomic stabilization, market economy sustainability, and control of illicit economy and corruption. Listen to the entire webcast and download the slides here, at the “Webcast” tab on the Counterinsurgency Center website.
