After upfront nerves, training was ‘fun’

The Advanced Media Training offered as an optional course for the students attending ILE was absolutely outstanding.

I highly recommend the training. Not only was the course content relevant and on point, but the course itself was equally well managed and designed.

Granted, I would have enjoyed a more in-depth curriculum on the subject, however given our already rigorous schedule it managed to pack in a lot of digestible detail into a small package.

The ‘lecture’ half of the instruction was direct and focused on the materials provided. Thus focusing on skills and the ‘how to’ rather than theory and broad-brush application. The examples provided where relevant, and up to date.

The lab or practical exorcise was, at first glance, somewhat intimidating. For me, this was mitigated by separating the initial lecture part of the course with enough time to properly prepare for the interviews. The interview facilitators were patient and reassuring, while providing vital feedback. Experiencing the three interview types was actually ‘fun’ once the initial nervousness was countered by proper preparation.

Take advantage of this opportunity to invest in yourself. Considering the time required to the benefit of the skills acquired, this is a classic no-brainer. Sign up and knock out the training, you’ll be glad you did.

Thanks for the great feedback, Charles! I know you spend a lot of time during ILE focusing on intellectual pursuits. Learning how to tackle problems is a critical part of an officer’s education. Because of time limitations, we focus in AMT on nuts-and-bolts issues to make a you better speaker. At the same time, I hope, teaching you how to think about an interview so you can handle a wide range of interview (or public speaking) situations in the future. I’m also glad you found it fun. We know giving an interview is a nerve-wracking experience (your instructors have done it themselves), but we work hard to make any criticism constructive and improvement-oriented and making sure to talk about positives as well. We’re consistently impressed with the baseline level of public-speaking skill our students bring to the class.
