Basic Rider Course

You are signing up for a 2-day 3-Wheel Basic Rider Course (3-WBRC). You will need your motorcycle on both days of the BRC. Two or three days before your scheduled class date, contact the Safety Office at 777-3333, ext 2 to make an appointment to pick up your temporary pass. This pass will allow you to ride to the training range during the days of your course only. You can pick up your pass in Bldg. 383, Room 202.

MSF defines the term “3-wheel motorcycle” for 3-WBRC purposes:

A 3-wheel motorcycle must meet the following design requirements:

  1. Three-track wheel orientation (leaves three separate tracks during straight-line operation)
    • Dual wheels may be front or rear
  2. Motorcycle-based conversion or design
    • Handlebar steering
    • Motorcycle-type controls arranged with the standard convention (convenience alterations such as a single brake pedal or lever control, automatic clutch, or automatic transmission are allowed)
    • Saddle seating
    • Seating causes rider/passenger to straddle vehicle
    • If designed for a passenger, passenger must be seated behind operator
  3. Turning diameter of the vehicle at its widest point must be less than 40 feet.
  4. The vehicle must meet all applicable federal/state on-road vehicle standards.
  5. Under no circumstances will vehicles with the following designs characteristics be allowed in the 3-WBRC:
    • Automotive hybrids or automotive conversions
    • Vehicles with automotive controls or seating
    • Vehicles with rear or front mounted engines (engines must be mounted midframe below the rider)
    • Vehicles with enclosed or semi-enclosed riding compartments
    • Any other significant departure from the standard motorcycle design.

MSF 3-Wheel Basic RiderCourse is a basic, entry-level, learn-to-ride 3-wheel motorcycle training and education course. It provides the same fundamental skills as the MSF Basic RiderCourse, but on 3-wheel, 3-track motorcycles (not sidecars). 3-WBRC RiderCoaches who have been trained and certified by the MSF conduct the 3-WBRC.

Course objectives for 3-WBRC are similar to the Basic RiderCourse:

  • Develop a safe, responsible 3-wheel motorcycle rider
  • Develop the mental skills for safe 3-wheel motorcycle riding
  • Develop the physical skills for safe 3-wheel motorcycle riding
  • Create an understanding of risk awareness and risk-taking
  • Develop a strategy to manage risk.

Generally, a person successfully completing the 3-WBRC will be able to demonstrate fundamental skills for general operation and control; demonstrate a knowledge of minimum safety considerations for operating on the street; acknowledge the importance of a low-risk and positive riding attitude; demonstrate safety habits that are shown to reduce risk; acknowledge personal capabilities and limitations as a 3-wheel motorcycle rider; and demonstrate the basic knowledge and skills to be a safe, responsible rider.

  • What does 3-WBRC consist of?
    • Both classroom and hands-on instruction. There are 9 riding exercises that take about 6-8 hours (more time may be needed for remedial training and/or breaks), 4 hours of classroom instruction, and a knowledge and skill test. Total instructional time is approximately 12 hours. A completion card will be issued, and a MSF Student Survey form is included in each 3-Wheel BRC Rider Handbook.
  • Does 3-WBRC use the same principles as the BRC?
    • Yes. Just like other curricula in the MSF Rider Education and Training System, the 3-WBRC honors the principles of SAM: Safety and risk management, Adult/Accelerated learning, and Motor skills development.
  • Are the requirements for personal protective gear for the 3-WBRC the same as the BRC?
    • Yes. Personal protective gear includes a helmet designed to meet DOT or ECE 22-05 standards, eye protection, gloves, over-the-ankle footwear, long-sleeved shirt or jacket and long pants.
    • While on the training range you will be required to wear upper garments that incorporate high visibility colors or a high visibility vest (e.g. fluorescent yellow-green, fluorescent orange-red or fluorescent red, etc.) during the day and a retro-reflective upper garment during the night.
  • How many participants can be trained in one 3-WBRC?
    • The participant/3-WBRC RiderCoach ratio is 6:2, with six participants maximum in a class. If only one RiderCoach is available, the maximum number of students is three; additional time may be needed for the range exercises.
  • What do successful graduates who complete 3-WBRC receive?
    • Besides developing fundamental skills and acquiring the strategy of Search, Evaluate and Execute (SEE), a graduate receives a 3-Wheel BRC Rider Handbook for the classroom portion, a 3-WBRC Completion Card, and a course MSF Student Survey form to mail to the MSF.
  • Will the 3-WBRC provide a licensing test waiver upon completion?
    • Possibly. While the 3-WBRC was designed to provide a license waiver, the state Department of Motor Vehicles will make the final determination for their state. Successful completion of the 3-WBRC should provide the skills and knowledge needed to obtain a license.

Riders who are eligible for this course; Military personnel, Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF), Department of the AF (DAF) and Department of Defense (DoD) employees, Retirees, military dependants, and long term contractors. Civilian dependants are not eligible for this course.
