Reimbursement of Expenses
The Department of Veterans Affairs, in limited circumstances, may provide reimbursement of non-VA medical expenses for veterans for their service-connected conditions, including veterans who were recently granted service-connected awards. For more information, click here.
Traumatic Injury Protection Program
Effective Nov. 26, 2008, Veterans Affairs has increased the number of traumatic injuries covered under the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection Program, or TSGLI, as well as liberalizing the criteria of other injuries.
New injuries covered include the partial amputation of the foot and hands and the degree of injuries based on severe burns.
Another important change to the TSGLI program is the payment of a $25,000 benefit to those injured who are hospitalized for 15 consecutive days as a result of a traumatic injury. Claims previously denied are being reviewed for approval.

Changes in Benefits, Entitlements
If your marital status changes because of marriage, divorce, remarriage, loss of spouse, or if you have a new addition to your family, your benefits and entitlements will change. This means you must ensure both you and your family are protected by updating data on file regarding DEERS and military identification cards, TRICARE, Veterans Affairs compensation, and the Survivor Benefit Plan. Your will may also need to be updated. If you need assistance, call your assigned Air Force Wounded Warrior Program care manager or call toll free 800-581-9437.
Courage to Care Courage to Talk
Courage to Care Courage to Talk is an educational campaign for hospitals and health care sites developed by the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress. Its goal is to facilitate and improve communication around war injuries between health care providers and families, and within the family itself, especially in talking to children. The campaign seeks to connect families to resources and providers in the hospital environment who can answer their questions, talk with them about their children, or address other family or communication concerns related to the injury.
