    Hatchell and fellow U.S. skaters Lizzie Armanto and Seth Levy took part in a U.S. Embassy Lima sponsored visit to Lima to participate in the festival and to conduct skateboarding demonstrations and workshops for at-risk youth in some of Lima’s inner city neighborhoods. A key message of the five-day program was to encourage Peruvian youth to reject drugs and lead healthy lives.

    Some 500 guests and media gathered at the Embassy to watch the election returns in Spanish and English and to learn more about the U.S. election process. Among the other activities were online information on candidate platforms, information on how the Electoral College works, a U.S. tourism booth, election and presidential trivia, and a photo station where guests could have their pictures taken with life-sized photos of the two candidates.

    The group of future journalists worked in teams to report on election results and interview Embassy personnel and guests. In partnership with one of Peru’s most widely read online media sites, the best of the students reports posted on blogs, Twitter and other social media platforms appeared on the La Mula news website. Through the social media challenge the students benefited by a real life reporting opportunity and the chance to learn more about the role of elections in democracies.

    The museum, located in region of Ica Province, was the winning proposal of the 2012 competition for its plan use the funds to help preserve its important textile collection from the Paracas culture. The Ambassadors Fund was established by the U.S. Congress in 2001 to help developing nations preserve their cultural heritage.

    The outdoor display of xerophytic plants (that require little water) and a floral display in the residence’s interior were part of a program organized by the Lima-based cultural and educational groups American Women’s Literary Club and Floralíes.
