Ronan Farrow, Special Advisor to the Secretary of State for Global Youth Issues, conducted a three-day visit to Algeria from February 27-29.  He met with both government officials and young Algerians to talk about the State Department’s youth initiatives and listen to ideas and challenges facing Algerian youth.  Addressing one of the country’s largest issues facing youth, unemployment, Mr. Farrow met with officials at several government employment agencies, including the National Agency for Employment and the Agency for Social Development.  He also met with the Minister of Youth and Sports, officials at the Algerian Foreign Ministry, and the Muslim Scouts.  Mr. Farrow gave a presentation at the “Ecole Superieure d’Informatique,” the nation’s leading public school on technical sciences, and held a panel discussion with students from several nongovernment student organizations such as  the Algeria chapter of the international student-run organization AIESEC.  He also met with the CEO of Djezzy, the number one service provider in the country, about the company’s unique youth outreach initiatives.  Mr. Farrow held a press conference to launch the new “Ambassador’s Youth Council,” a council made up of both young Algerians and community leaders who will advise Ambassador Ensher on issues important to Algerian youth.  Mr. Farrow gave several presentations and panel discussions at the embassy about youth empowerment to groups of young IRC members, Facebook fans, alumni, and Twitter followers.
