Examining Peace Media with the National Peace Essay Contest
Each year the U.S. Institute of Peace runs the National Peace Essay Contest (NPEC) to enable high school students to investigate some aspect of the peacebuilding process.
In collaboration with PeaceMedia, for school year 2011-12, the Institute selected the question "How can new media best be leveraged to help build peace and prevent conflict?" as the topic for NPEC. In various writing and discussion exercises, students will consider how best to harness the power and potential of new media to manage conflict and build peace. PeaceMedia stands as a broad resource to help high school students understand the power of new media to ameliorate conflict and build peace. In partnership with NPEC, we have developed an activity to help students enhance this understanding.
In the activity, students are asked to select a video from the PeaceMedia website and comment on how it advances the peace process. Links to these videos and the associated commentary will be showcased on this page below. The most compelling entries will be presented as Featured Media on the PeaceMedia home page.
