    Seven Years A Slave: The Past and Present Journey

    Rome, September 21, 2012 -- Film screening at the Embassy on Friday, September 21st, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. We invite you to join us in marking the 150th anniversary of the date on which President Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Together with the final executive order on January 1, 1863 and the 13th Amendment to the Constitution three years later, the Proclamation formally freed the slaves.

    Rome, July 4th, 2012 -- Ambassador Miguel Díaz hosted an American Independence Day celebration at his residence. The official ceremony included the presentation of the colors by the Marine Color Guard, and the singing of the national anthem by Corporal Megan Victoria.

    Second Town Hall Dialogue on May 24: Women and Migration

    May 24, 2012 -- The U.S. Embassy to the Holy See organized a panel discussion on May 24 entitled “Building Bridges of Opportunity: Women and Migration.” The town-hall style conference was attended by 95 representatives of the diplomatic corps, NGOs, universities, Catholic lay organizations, media, and the public.

    Photo exhibition and reception to raise awareness of trafficking in Nepal

    May 15, 2012 -- On May 15, the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See hosted a photojournalist exhibition of women at risk of being trafficked in Nepal. The photos were taken by a New York Times photojournalist and included one of Charimaya Tamang, who in 2011 was presented with a Hero Award by Hillary Clinton for her work in trafficking prevention after she became one of the first women in Nepal to prosecute her trafficker.

    On March 8, 2012, the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See hosted three noted experts to discuss both the challenges and opportunities posed by integrating migrants from diverse into receiving countries.

    February 18, 2012 -- [...] On the historic occasion of the Ordinary Public Consistory for the creation of new Cardinals, February 18, 2012, I wish to offer my sincere congratulations to the two Americans elevated to the College of Cardinals, Archbishop Timothy Michael Dolan of New York, and Archbishop Edwin Frederick O’Brien, Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

    January 4th, 2012. 93rd anniversary of the historic meeting between President Woodrow Wilson and Pope Benedict XV

    The event occurred in 1919 while President Wilson was on a tour of Europe following World War One. This was the first ever meeting between a U.S. President and a Pope.
