David J. Lane

Ambassador David Lane was nominated by President Barack Obama on April 16, 2012, to serve as United States Representative to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture.  The United States Senate confirmed Ambassador Lane on May 24, 2012.
 
Mr. Lane has more than twenty years of experience working in leadership positions across sectors.  Most recently, he served in the Obama Administration as Assistant to the President and Counselor to the Chief of Staff in the White House.  During the Clinton Administration, he held key appointments including Chief of Staff to the United States Secretary of Commerce and Executive Director of the National Economic Council.  Mr. Lane also worked in the United States Congress as a Legislative Assistant to Senator Gary Hart.
 
Mr. Lane’s leadership in the non-profit sector includes serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of the ONE Campaign, a global advocacy organization focused on extreme poverty, development, and reform.  During his tenure, he successfully merged two organizations and drove strategic initiatives on issues ranging from food security and effective governance to global health and economic development.  Before that, as Director of Foundation Advocacy and the East Coast Office of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Lane helped lead that organization’s advocacy and public policy work on a wide range of matters, including global development and global health.  He has also worked as a management consultant advising on strategic planning issues.  Mr. Lane previously served as Vice-Chair of Transparency International USA, and he is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
 
A native of the State of Florida, Mr. Lane earned his B.A. from the University of Virginia and his M.P.A. from the Princeton University Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
