Naples, October 9, 2011

For the second consecutive year the City of Naples hosted the Susan Komen Race for the Cure, a 5K run and a 2K walk along the waterfront to help promote breast cancer prevention and sports.

After the great success of its first edition in 2010 with over 8,000 participants, some 9,000 local residents and people from foreign communities, including members of U.S. Armed Forces, enthusiastically flocked to Piazza del Plebiscito to either walk, run, or simply support breast cancer survivors or people struggling to recover from the disease. Consul General Donald Moore, who ran the 5K and then awarded the winners together with Mayor of Naples Luigi De Magistris and President of Komen Campania committee Tommaso Mandato, expressed his full appreciation of the event: “It’s great to see what sports competitions can do. I love to exercise and I have already participated in another Race for the Cure in Florida. This city has demonstrated its true value by combining sport and civic engagement, and I hope that Naples community will welcome future editions of the S. Komen Race with the same enthusiasm”.

A few days prior to the event, the “Health Village” in Piazza Plebiscito, directed by Prof. Annamaria Colao and Prof. Sabino De Placido, offered free screenings to all citizens to allow an early diagnosis of breast and thyroid cancer, osteoporosis and diabetes, and gave useful advice on how a better lifestyle can help prevent such diseases.
