Pompei, September 11, 2011

September 11, 2011 marked the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that took place in the United States of America. As a commemoration and sign of solidarity, the City of Pompei held a ceremony in the name of the nearly three thousand men, women and children who died in the tragic attacks to the Twin Towers in New York.

The service commenced with a holy mass at the Basilica Madonna del Rosario and it was concluded at the site where a memorial, represented by a piece of steel debris from the Twin Towers, is located. A laurel crown was placed at the monument’s base in honor to the victims and families affected by the tragic event.

The mayor of Pompei, local authorities, US consulate representatives along with acting Consul General Ms. Pamela Caplis and fellow Italian citizens, witnessed the ceremony. Events like this one can be seen as a proof of brotherhood that links both Italian and U.S. citizens working together for the same cause: peace.

The ceremony held in Pompei is one of the numerous testimonies of solidarity that came from all of southern Italy during this commemorative event that poignantly reminded us what occurred 10 years ago.
