Capital of the Midi-Pyrénées Region and France’s fourth-largest city with over 400,000 inhabitants, Toulouse occupies a central position within a Region located in southwestern France close to the Pyrénées Mountains. It is now one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country, with an average of 16,000 newcomers per year.

Physically the largest Region of France (roughly the size of Belgium and the Netherlands combined), Midi-Pyrénées is comprised of eight departments with an overall population of 2.6 million people.

Best known as the home of Airbus, Toulouse is one of the leading European cities for aerospace and aviation interest, as the final assembly point for Airbus Industrie aircrafts. The city is one of the fastest-growing centers in France for biotech research and also boasts a strong electronics industry.

With over 110,000 students enrolled at 3 public universities and 14 graduate engineering and business schools, Toulouse ranks second only to Paris as an academic center in France. The relationship between local academic and research entities and the U.S. is strong, with numerous exchanges of students, professors and scientists across a wide range of areas.
