Ambassador Patrick S. Moon opened the first regional basketball tournament for U.S. Embassies December 8-9 in Sarajevo. The two-day, ten-game tournament featured Embassy teams from the Belgrade, Zagreb, and Podgorica, and two teams from the host Embassy in Sarajevo.  Teams were composed of both local and U.S. staff members.

The tournament was organized to forge stronger ties between the employees of U.S. Embassies in the region.  Ambassador Moon told participants “we are very pleased to be able to host you here in Sarajevo for the first regional U.S. Embassy basketball tournament.  This is an excellent opportunity to get to know your colleagues from other embassies, build camaraderie, demonstrate good sportsmanship and have fun.”

Embassy Sarajevo’s teams placed first and third in the tournament and U.S. Embassy Sarajevo player Selvedin Jamakovic was named the tournament MVP.  U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Nicholas Hill presided over the awards ceremony December 9, presenting medals to the first (Embassy Sarajevo Team 1), second (Embassy Belgrade), and third place (Embassy Sarajevo Team 2) finishers.

U.S. Embassies in the region have participated in regional soccer tournaments in the past.  This is the first regional basketball tournament in recent memory.  There are plans for an annual basketball tournament which will rotate throughout the region.
