Consul Joaquin F. Monserrate

Consul General Joaquin F. Monserrate

Joaquin F. Monserrate was from 2009 until July 2012 the Political and Economic Counselor at the United States Interests Section in Cuba.  Previously, he was the Deputy Chief of the Economic Section of the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam, in Hanoi (2007-09).  He is now the Consul General in the United States Consulate General in Surabaya, Indonesia, where he served his first tour from 2000-02.  He joined the Foreign Service in 1999, and has served tours in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs in Washington, DC, and in Indonesia and India.  Joaquin is a lawyer, and prior to joining the State Department he practiced criminal and civil litigation, and worked as a print reporter in his native Puerto Rico.  He has a B.A. from Georgetown University and a J.D from the University of Puerto Rico.  Joaquin is married to Michaela Newnham, whom he met while on third year abroad studies in England. Joaquin likes most sports and is consistently bad at all the ones he practices.
