A Celebration of U.S Malaysian Educational Exchanges at Ambassador Jones Residence.

On January 18, Ambassador Paul Jones hosted a reception for over 250 people to celebrate the anniversaries of two successful exchange programs, the Fulbright Program  which is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through scholars and researchers and the 10th Anniversary of The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program.

On January 18, Ambassador Paul Jones hosted a reception for over 250 people to celebrate the anniversaries of two successful exchange programs, the Fulbright Program  which is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through scholars and researchers and the 10th Anniversary of The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Program.
The reception was attended by key personalities such as Director General Tan Sri Abd Ghafar of Ministry of Education, MACEE Executive Director James Coffman, American and Malaysian Fulbrighters and Alumni. It was also a fitting occasion to welcome and introduce the new cohort of 75 American Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) who were undertaking an orientation program, in Kuala Lumpur before departing to Perak, Pahang, Terengganu and Johor to teach English to Malaysian students. Similarly, Ambassador Jones and guests said goodbye to the 45 YES Malaysian students who will be leaving Malaysia shortly for the United States where they will attend high schools and live with American families for 6 months.
In his remarks, Ambassador Jones expressed that these exchange programs are designed to help strengthen the U.S.-Malaysia relations.  He thanked the government of Malaysia for their support in the various educational exchange programs, the American and Malaysian Fulbright grantees for sharing their expertise and ideas, AFS for their continued support in managing the YES program and YES alumni for their creativity and active involvement in the Malaysian-American Alumni Partnership (MAAP). 
Ambassador Jones further stated that to date, more than two thousand (2000) Malaysians have travelled to the United States on a Fulbright scholarship in all fields of study while a thousand (1000) American citizens have come to Malaysia for academic work since 1963.  Similarly, since 2004, over 300 Malaysian students have travelled to the U.S. to participate in the YES program.  He added that this time last year, the YES program in Malaysia started a new chapter where American high school students were placed in local Malaysian schools for an academic year, and this has been an amazing experience for the American students and recipient schools. 
Guests were entertained by OM Sri Skakti Muniswarar Urumee Melam band led by American Fulbrighter, Aaron Paige, Mahalohalo Ensemble band led by American Fulbrighter Bernard Ellorin, ETAs Gina Ciliberto, Ruth Kloha, Paul Flo and Justin Galle and the YES students.
The Fulbright Program in Malaysia is administered by the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE); a bi-national commission that promotes educational exchange and Education USA while the YES program is administered by Antarabudaya Malaysia, the local partner of the American Field Service (AFS).
