Embassy Activity

Ambassador helps celebrate Peace Corps Legacy

February 1, 2013

On February 1, Ambassador Anania helped unveil the Peace Corps Volunteer World Map Project at the 50th anniversary of Iporoma school in Erowarte. Following remarks from the village captain and memories from former teachers, Ambassador Anania introduced the Peace Corps Volunteers and their map project to the crowd of students, teachers, community members and press.  Peace Corps Suriname closes in July 2013, but their legacy will live on thanks to projects like the World Map Project, which facilitates a fun and creative way to learn geography.  The Ambassador recognized Peace Corps Volunteers Michelle Kaunang and Alycia Shatters, who initiated and led the project, for their service to Suriname and the United States and encouraged the whole community to learn from and enjoy the educational artwork. Participating in the program demonstrated the Embassy’s continuing friendship with the Surinamese people and promoted mutual understanding.
