Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)

FOIA, 5 U.S.C. §552, provides that any person has the right to request access to federal agency records or information. Federal agencies are required to disclose records or information upon receipt of a written FOIA request, except such records or information that are exempt from disclosure pursuant 5 U.S.C. §552.

Reading Room

The 1996 FOIA amendments require federal agencies to implement a publicly accessible Electronic Reading Room to store commonly requested documents.

JAG / CNLSC Instructions

JAG / CNLSC Instructions also include administrative staff manuals and instructions, or portions thereof, that establish Department of Defense (DoD) policy or interpretations of policy that affect the public.

JAG / CNLSC Notices

JAG / CNLSC Notices includes JAG Corps and Commander Naval Legal Service Command notices. A notice is a directive that has a one-time or brief nature and has a self-canceling provision, and it has the same force and effect as an instruction. A notice usually remains in effect for less than 6 months, and is not permitted to remain in effect for longer than one year.
