Relocation Guideline Information

Relocation costs are costs associated with relocating from outside a 50 mile radius to within commuting distance to the ORNL area, either as a new employee or as a result of the permanent change of assigned work location of an existing employee.

Housing

Oak Ridge is located at the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains in East Tennessee, approximately 30 minutes from the Knoxville Tennessee Airport. For temporary housing, there are a number of apartment complexes within 20 minutes of ORNL. They range from studios to one, two, and three bedroom apartments as well as homes to rent. Larger apartments are difficult to find within the Oak Ridge immediate area and may require you to be located in West Knoxville for your temporary housing. ORNL has an active intern program managed by ORISE which results in short term housing shortages during the summer months. We encourage you to utilize the resources on this website to assist you in finding housing prior to your arrival at ORNL. If you will be arriving in Oak Ridge still needing to look for housing the relocation office will arrange temporary or interim lodging arrangements. The Relocation Office maintains a list of authorized vendors who provide short-term housing.

Utilities

When you first arrive at your apartment or house, the electricity or gas may not be hooked up. If you are renting, talk to your landlord to see if they can turn on the utilities the day you arrive. If your landlord cannot help with utilities, or you are purchasing a home you will need to call the utility company in your area.

All local calls are charged on a flat monthly fee. You will need to sign up for a long-distance carrier, or you can use the pre-paid phone cards available for purchase at many gas stations, grocery stores, Wal-mart, Sam's Club (in West Knoxville), or other stores.
