Crucial Role of the NIDC
Isotopes play an extremely important role in the fields of nuclear medicine, homeland security,
energy, defense, as well as in basic research. While these utilizations often require
significant (microgram to gram) amounts of specific isotopes, they are often produced one
atom at a time. This makes the production expensive and the supply limited, so coordination
among the different production facilities is crucial to ensure availability to the
end users.
