Partnerships make transportation options possible

There has been an influx of thousands of new workers and residents at Fort Meade due to the U.S. Department of Defense's Base Realignment and Closure process, which brought the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Defense Media Activity and Defense Adjudication Activities and the expanding presence of command partners such as the National Security Agency and the U.S. Cyber Command.

Today, Fort Meade is home to more than 95 partner units. In an effort to mitigate traffic congestion by decreasing the number of cars entering the installation. During the past few years, Fort Meade has worked with federal, state and local officials to establish partnerships and find ways to work together to bring these options. The resources below, from the SoundOff! October 2011 Transportation Insert, are an example of many of our partnership efforts.

• Mass Transportation Benefit Program offsets commute costs

  • Eligible program participants are eligible for transit benefits up to $230 per month (parking fees are not included) for specific pre-approved commuter mass transit transportation costs, not to exceed actual expenses.

• Guaranteed Ride Home emergency transportation provides no cost travel

  • The Guaranteed Ride Home program, managed by Commuter Connections, is like an insurance policy for unexpected situations. The program offers a free ride to the commuter's home in a taxi or a rental car, depending on the commuter's home location.

• ICC Route 202 offers convenient travel
  • The Maryland Transit Administration is now offering an express bus service that links Montgomery and Prince George's counties, and Fort Meade
• Vanpools simplify transportation shuffle for groups
  • Vanpools bring employees to work from Northern Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia to work sites on post. More than 40 vanpools have been formed since January 2011, with more created each month.
• Meade Alliance guide uses map, tips to detail choices
  • The Meade Alliance has created the Destination Fort Meade transportation guide, which provides a convenient brochure-format summary of mass transit options for getting to and from the installation, such as local buses, commuter busses, shuttle bus service, vanpool, MARC and Metro services.
• Odenton-Greenbelt: Shuttles makes transit connections easier
  • Department of Defense ID cardholders on Fort Meade who commute using the MARC trains and Metro rail and buses have shuttle bus service available at no cost.

• Subscription bus reduces post vehicle traffic

  • The I-95 corridor bus stops at Route 630, Route 234, Route 123 and Springfield in Northern Virginia before traveling to Fort Meade. The I-66 corridor bus stops at Manassas, Centreville and Stringfellow. The Waldorf bus stops at St. Charles and Clinton.

• Transit Tickertape offers one-click service

  • The Central Maryland Regional Transit Corporation, in coordination with the Maryland Transit Administration, has developed a new model for disseminating transportation information, the backbone of which is a centralized database and call center that will serve as a one-stop shop for public and private transportation services.

• Commuters are one click away from travel services
  • MeadeRide offers a one-stop travel information resource connecting Fort Meade commuters with information about transportation choices, and matching those who want to "share getting there" with vanpools and subscription buses.
