4/2/2010 - DENVER -- After sharing a home with the Air Reserve Personnel Center for more than 33 years at the Buckley Annex here, the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Denver closed March 31.
"I hope each of you walk away from your federal career with the tremendous amount of pride you should have for your support to the Department of Defense, the federal government, our nation as a whole, and most importantly to your customers you served," said Roxane Nowling, DFAS Denver director, to DFAS employees at a group retirement ceremony March 11.
The closure was mandated by a 2005 Base Realignment and Closure decision from the Secretary of Defense. Most of the work performed by DFAS Denver employees was transferred to remaining sites in Cleveland and Indianapolis.
"Our opportunities are endless as we start the next chapter of our lives," said Annie Bates, one of nearly 200 DFAS employees who retired in March.
In 1951, the Air Force Finance Center was activated and opened its doors at 3800 York Street in Denver. The Air Reserve Records Center was established at the same location in 1953.
By 1976, both organizations had changed their names, and in September that year the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center moved with the Air Reserve Personnel Center to 6760 Irvington Place.
In 1991, as its role expanded, AFAFC became the Defense Finance and Accounting Service Denver. At its peak DFAS Denver employed nearly 3,000 civilian and military employees. |
