Lautenberg Calls for Immediate Air Pollution Monitoring as Coast Guard Prepares to Burn Massive Oil SlickLautenberg Press Office (202) 224-3224Wednesday, April 28, 2010WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to begin immediate air quality testing to ensure the public’s safety following last week’s major oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The letter to EPA Assistant Administrator for Air and Radiation Gina McCarthy comes as the U.S. Coast Guard prepares to begin burning oil. “Gulf Coast families have a right to know how this massive oil spill is affecting the air they breathe,” Lautenberg wrote. “I ask that you immediately begin comprehensive monitoring of air pollution levels across the affected region and fully inform the public of dangerous conditions.” A copy of Senator Lautenberg’s letter to EPA can be found here: http://lautenberg.senate.gov/assets/Gulf_Fire_Letter.pdf ###
