Traumatic Stress Response (TSR)
The Traumatic Stress Response team, formerly known as the Critical Incident Stress Management team, is a group of representatives from the Mental health, the Airman and Family Readiness Center and the Base Chapel that helps prepare people for what they may face before dealing with a traumatic event, such as the aftermath of an airplane crash, clean up of a natural disaster site, death of a service member, death of a family member or coping with what they've witnessed after the fact. TSR team also provides Pre-Exposure Preparation training to enhance resilience in individuals and groups who are or may be exposed to potentially.
After a traumatic experience, a number of physical and/or mental changes may occur; for example, a person's sleep, thoughts, social interactions and concentration may be interrupted by intrusive thoughts of the trauma or event experienced. These changes are normal reactions to abnormal events. Individuals exposed to a traumatic events are given information about what they are experiencing and validate what they are feeling and if they are having difficulty then point them in the right direction of the helping professional.
Part of the TSR team's role is to educate individuals about these potential reactions to trauma, perform psychological first aid and guide those impacted by an event to return to pre-event functioning; in other words, we foster resilience.
The TSR team advises commanders and counsels Airmen after a traumatic event happens. The commanders are informed about the services and ways the TSR team is able to help those involved cope with what has occurred. It can range from a lack of feeling, to shock, anger, or sorrow. The TSR team provides education on the human nervous system (fight or flight response), stress management, and unit and personal resilience.
