Civilians have been an integral part of the U.S. Army since the Revolutionary War. The Board of War and Ordnance was established in 1776 with responsibility to equip and dispatch troops; account for arms, ammunition and equipment; maintain personnel records; and disburse funds. The board was made up of five members of the Continental Congress, clerks and a paid secretary — Richard Peters, the first Army civilian. Civilians were hired by the Continental Army for driving, crafts, carpentry and laborer jobs.
Today, with more than 330,000 civilian employees, Army Civilian Service is the largest, busiest and most successful "company" within the Department of Defense. Army civilians have skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. We are federal civil servants and are committed to selfless service in the performance of our duties in support of our nation and consider it an honor and a privilege to support our soldiers.

How to Apply for Jobs
VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENTS — Army vacancies and a wealth of information about Army civilian employment may be found at the Army Civilian Service website. The most current and reliable information is available at this site under "Army Job Search". Army also posts job announcements on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) USAJOBS web site. By accessing either of these sites you can view Army job announcements.
All of our announcements, both internal and external, are posted on USA Jobs. Please read the 'Who May Apply' to see if you are eligible to be considered for the specific vacancy. Internal announcements may be confined to Army or Status applicants only, while external announcements are open to all US citizens.
AUTOMATED RECRUITMENT TOOL — The Army completed its transition to the DoD Enterprise Recruitment Tool (USA Staffing) effective, 1 May 2012. USA Staffing will be the single hiring process and tool used by all DoD components.
You can create up to five distinct resumes in USAJOBS. You can search for jobs easily in several different ways for various positions at locations throughout the world, including Ft. Detrick. Military Spouse Hire
Defense Civilian Personnel Advisory Service (DCPAS)
The CPAC's Personnel Specialists are available to register eligible spouses of active military stationed at Fort Detrick into the Spouse Preference Program by appointment. Spouses may contact the CPAC at 301-619-2247 to set up an appointment for registration, or may come in to the CPAC during regular business hours, 0800-1600, Monday-Friday, to set up an appointment with a Personnel Specialist.
