GSA Names New FAS Commissioner

Jan. 22, 2012

Washington -- Today, the General Services Administration’s (GSA) Acting Administrator Dan Tangherlini named Thomas Sharpe as the head of the agency’s Federal Acquisition Services (FAS). As commissioner, Sharpe will oversee the acquisition and provision of more than $55 billion in best-value products, services, and solutions to federal agencies.

“Over the past year, GSA has made significant progress toward refocusing on our mission and giving the American people the kind of efficient and effective service they deserve. Today we take another step forward in this effort by adding Thomas Sharpe to the GSA leadership team,” said Tangherlini. “His experience as an acquisition leader both in government and the private sector as well as his work representing a key customer of GSA at the Treasury Department make him uniquely qualified to help GSA better serve all of our partners."

Sharpe has 30 years of experience in both the private sector and government, serving most recently as the Department of the Treasury's Senior Procurement Executive. In that role, he was responsible for Treasury-wide procurement policy, procurement career management, and oversight and continuous improvement of bureau procurement operations.

Before joining Treasury, Sharpe served as a consulting principal with IBM Business Consulting Services responsible for the marketing, sales and delivery of procurement transformation engagements with IBM's commercial and government customers.  His prior operational procurement experience includes playing a key role in strategically sourcing IBM's technical service requirements that generated competitive advantage to IBM.  Sharpe has held senior procurement and managerial roles with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Defense.

This announcement is the latest in the agency’s effort to deliver the best value and savings to our partner agencies. Last week,Tangherlini laid out a new mission statement and a set of new priorities for the agency
