U.S. Embassy Supports a 5-Day Training on Professional Ethics
The U.S. Embassy recently used its Senegalese contacts to spearhead a training program in neighboring Guinea-Bissau in partnership with the ANG (Guinea-Bissau News Agency). The training theme was professional ethics in social communication, and Senegal’s national APS (Senegalese Press Agency) sent Mr. Cheikh Tidiane Ndiaye, a Senegalese Senior Journalist, to travel to Bissau as a joint trainer along with an ANG counterpart. (Although Guinea-Bissau is a Portuguese-speaking country, many professionals have a good level of understanding in French.)

Secretary Clinton met with participants in the African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP)
Secretary Clinton met with participants in the African Women’s Entrepreneurship Program (AWEP), a three-week visitor program in which 47 African women entrepreneurs from 37 countries engage in professional development training and networking opportunities with American counterparts.

U.S. Ambassador Lewis Lukens Presents Credentials to President Malam Bacai Sanha
Lewis Lukens, Ambassador of the United States of America to the Republic of Senegal and Guinea-Bissau presented his credentials to His Excellency President Malam Bacai Sanha in Bissau, on October 19, 2011. Ambassador Lukens and President Sanha expressed the will of the two governments to reinforce the bilateral cooperation between the United States of America and Guinea-Bissau.

New Ambassador-Designate Arrives in Dakar
Lewis Lukens, the new U. S. Ambassador-designate to Senegal and to Guinea-Bissau, arrived in Dakar on Tuesday, August 9. Mr. Lukens was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 30, 2011. Dakar is not new for Mr. Lukens. He lived in the Senegalese capital from 1967 to 1970, when his father was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U. S. Embassy in Dakar.

United States Celebrates Its 235th Birthday!
On Monday, July 4, 2011, the United States celebrated the 235th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress in Boston on July 4, 1776. In Bissau, the reception was presided on July 7, 2011 by Ambassador Bernicat and Mr. Adelino Mano Queta, Bissau-Guinean Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Communities, in Bissau.

The U.S. Embassy Opens an “American Corner" in Bissau
On January 26, 2011, His Excellency Robert Yamate, Deputy Chief of the Mission of the Embassy of the United States of America in Senegal and Guinea Bissau opened the American Corner in Bissau, located in the library of the Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisa (INEP). The ribbon-cutting was followed by a tour of the facilities for VIPs and an audience of about 150 people.
