Robert Cardillo Selected to be DIA Deputy Director

Washington D.C. - April 19, 2010

Defense Intelligence Agency Director Lt. Gen. Ronald L. Burgess Jr. announced today his selection of Mr. Robert T. Cardillo as the next DIA deputy director, upon the departure of the incumbent, Ms. Letitia Long.

Ms. Long was announced to be the next head of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency earlier this year. Mr. Cardillo is expected to take over the duties later this summer following Ms. Long’s move to NGA.

The deputy director is the second-ranking position at DIA and assists the director in both the daily operation and long-term planning for the organization.

Mr. Cardillo currently serves as DIA’s deputy director for analysis and the Department of Defense’s functional manager for analysis. Lt. Gen. Burgess selected him following a review of highly qualified senior executives from across the Intelligence Community.

Robert T. Cardillo
Deputy Director for Analysis

Robert Cardillo is the Deputy Director for Analysis, Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA). As such, he directs the analytical effort of approximately 4,000 intelligence professionals responsible for producing the national military intelligence required to develop and execute the National Security Strategy. He is also the Defense Department's Functional Manager for Analysis. In this role, he manages all-source analytic responsibilities and leads efforts to evaluate and improve the performance of the analytic community, which includes DIA, the Service Intelligence Centers, and the intelligence centers at the Combatant Commands.

Mr. Cardillo began his career with DIA in 1983 as an imagery analyst. In May of 2000 he was selected to the Defense Intelligence Senior Executive Service. Throughout his career, he has served in a variety of leadership positions within the Intelligence Community. In the summer of 2009, Mr. Cardillo served as the Acting J2, a first for a civilian, in support of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Other key leadership positions included: Director, Analysis and Production and as Director, Source Operations and Management at the National-Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA).

Mr. Cardillo earned a Bachelor of Arts in Government from Cornell University in 1983 and a Master of Arts in National Security Studies from Georgetown University in 1988. He is an alumnus of the Councile for Excellence in Government, the Joint Chiefs of Staff Capstone Course, and Havard University's Program for Senior Managers in Government. Mr. Cardillo is the recipient of the Presidential Rank of Distinguished Executive, Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive, Vice President's Hammer Award, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joint Meritorious Civilian Service Award, DIA's Analyst of the Year, Director DIA's Intelligence Award, and NGA's Distinguished Civilian Service Award.
