ICYMI: Rep. Garrett Presents Missing Military Medals to WWII Veteran's Daughter

Feb 7, 2013

NEWTON, NJ – On Monday, Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ) presented Newton native Kelly Johnson with her father’s missing military medals during a formal medal ceremony at the Newton VFW.  Garrett issued the following statement after the ceremony:

Rep. Scott Garrett and Newton VFW Commander Frank Smith present First Sergeant James Joseph Johnson’s military medals to Kelly Johnson

“Army First Sgt. James Joseph Johnson was a true American hero.  A veteran of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, First Sgt. Johnson was awarded twelve medals, including the Purple Heart, for his service to our country.  Like so many Americans from the ‘greatest generation,’ we will never forget First Sgt. Johnson’s sacrifices in defense of our freedom.  After First Sgt. Johnson passed away, his daughter, Kelly Johnson, came to my office in search of her father’s missing military medals.  Today, I am happy that we are finally able to present Kelly with these medals.  These medals are a reminder of her father’s sacrifice for our nation and the sacrifice of those who continue to wear our nation’s uniform today.”
