Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, and claims more lives each year than all other major cancers combined. This year, more than 226,000 U.S. men and women will be diagnosed with lung cancer, and nearly 161,000 will die from the disease. Lung cancers are generally diagnosed at an advanced, incurable stage because patients often lack signs and symptoms in the early stages of the disease. Although several factors have been shown to contribute to the development of lung cancer, smoking and exposure to environmental carcinogens may be among the most prevalent. Importantly, military personnel are at a higher risk of developing lung cancer than the general population due to increased rates of smoking as well as an increased likelihood of being exposed to environmental carcinogens during their service.
