Gerard Depardieu, in tax fight, gets Russian citizenship

The Kremlin has cast Gerard Depardieu in one of the most surprising roles of his life — as a new Russian citizen.

The announcement Thursday that President Vladimir Putin has approved Depardieu’s application for citizenship is almost a real-life analogue to the French actor’s 1990 comedy Green Card, in which his character enters into a sham marriage in order to work in the United States.

But in this version, taxes appear to be at the heart of the matter. Depardieu has waged a battle against a proposed super tax on millionaires in his native country.
French President Francois Hollande plans to raise the tax on earned income above €1 million ($1.3 million) to 75 percent from the current 41 percent, while Russia has a flat 13-percent tax rate.

A representative for the former Oscar nominee declined to say whether he had accepted the Russian offer.

Justin Bieber calls for tough laws after paparazzo death

The 29-year-old photographer had just snapped shots of Justin Bieber’s exotic white Ferrari when he was struck and killed by a passing car – a death that has spurred renewed debate over dangers paparazzi can bring on themselves and the celebrities they chase.

The accident prompted some stars including the teen heartthrob himself on Wednesday to renew their calls for tougher laws to rein in their pursuers, though previous urgings have been stymied by First Amendment protections.

In a statement, Bieber said his prayers were with the photographer’s family. Ironically, the singer wasn’t even in the Ferrari on Tuesday.

“Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves,” Bieber said in the statement released by Island Def Jam Music Group.

Photographer killed while shooting Justin Bieber's car

Police say a paparazzo was hit by a car and killed after taking photos of Justin Bieber’s Ferrari sports car in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police Officer James Stoughton says the man died at a hospital Tuesday evening. Stoughton says Bieber was not in the car at the time.

Sgt. Rudy Lopez told the Los Angeles Times that the pop star’s friend was driving the car when it was pulled over for a traffic stop. It was parked on a busy street when the photographer arrived.

Police say the man was struck by a car as he returned to his own car.

Stoughton says no charges are expected against the motorist who hit the man.

“While I was not present nor directly involved with this tragic accident, my thoughts and prayers are with the family of the victim,” Bieber said in a statement. “Hopefully this tragedy will finally inspire meaningful legislation and whatever other necessary steps to protect the lives and safety of celebrities, police officers, innocent public bystanders, and the photographers themselves.”

Kim Kardashian's pregnancy announced by Kanye West

Earlier in 2012, Kim Kardashian, 32, and rapper Kanye West, 35, went public with their romance, and they’re ending the year with the announcement that Kardashian is pregnant.

During a concert at Atlantic City’s Revel Resort on Sunday night, West paused in the middle of a song to make the reveal. “Can we make some noise for my baby mom right quick?” he said.

Kardashian later confirmed the pregnancy. According to E!, she is about 12 weeks along. That would place the baby’s birth date some time in June 2013.

This will be the first child for both West and Kardashian, both of whom have had very public personal lives throughout their professional careers. West had a long relationship with model Amber Rose from 2008 until 2010 (she is now pregnant with Wiz Khalifa’s first child). Meanwhile, Kardashian is still technically married to Brooklyn Nets forward Kris Humphries, as the divorce dissolving their 72-day marriage has yet to be finalized.

Kardashian had been planning on having children—a story line during last season’s run of Keeping Up With the Kardashians involved her looking into freezing some of her eggs.

This will be the second child to enter into the inner circle of music’s most powerful family, as frequent West collaborators Jay-Z and Beyoncé celebrated the birth of their first child earlier in 2012. West, Kardashian, Jay, and Bey have been spotted together numerous times over the past few months.

Harry Carey Jr., character actor in classic Hollywood Westerns, dies

Harry Carey Jr., a character actor who made a name for himself as part of director John Ford’s classics The Searchers and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, passed away on Thursday of natural causes at a hospice center in Santa Barbara, Calif. He was 91 years old.

Born in 1921 to silent film stars Harry Carey Sr. (who spent the bulk of his career in Westerns as well) and Olive Carey, Harry Jr.’s career spanned five decades. Though he rarely took top billing in any of his pictures, his military background (he served in the Navy during World War II) and his horse-riding ability made him an ideal sidekick to friend and frequent co-star John Wayne. The pair appeared in over 10 films together, often with Ford at the helm.

Carey also appeared in films with his parents: One with his father (1948′s Red River) and two with his mother (1956′s The Searchers and 1961′s Two Rode Together).

Younger audiences will likely recognize Carey from his roles as Mr. Anderson in Gremlins, one of the saloon regulars in Back to the Future Part III, and as Marshal Fred White in Tombstone. Overall, Carey appeared in over 100 films and 100 TV episodes (including stops on Gunsmoke and Little House on the Prarie).

He is survived by his wife Marilyn Carey, whom he married in 1944, three children, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
