'The Wizards Return: Alex vs Alex': FIRST LOOK

A year after the last Wizards of Waverly Place episode aired, we get a first look at art from the one-hour reunion special airing this March, The Wizards Return: Alex vs Alex. The special will follow Selena Gomez’s Alex and the rest of the Russo family as they visit long-lost relatives in Tuscany. A spell goes wrong and splits Alex in two, resulting in an Evil Alex who wants to take over the world — and a Good Alex who must stop Evil Alex at any cost. The story leads to a climactic battle between Alex’s two selves atop the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Pretty much all of that is referenced in the concept art below. And nothing screams evil like a Cruella De Vil-esque streak of white hair. READ FULL STORY »

Go under the sea with the new 'Wild Kratts' science special

PBS Kids

Those unbelievably energetic wildlife explorer brothers Chris and Martin Kratt (Zooboomafoo, Kratts Creatures) are about to take you down… into the ocean that is. In a one-hour Wild Kratts: Lost at Sea special, airing on PBS on Monday, January 21 (check your local listings), the guys’ animated personas will head to the corral reef in “Blowfish Blowout” and then try to talk to the dolphins in  “Speaking Dolphinese.” After brief live-action intros by the brothers in both episodes, it launches into the Wild Kratts setup where animated versions of the guys and the rest of their team (Aviva, Koki, and Jimmy), go on an adventure. The special, with its mix of humor, action, and animal info, continues the series’ winning tradition of being educational without ever feeling like a lesson.

Meet the new Dream Team.

For the uninitiated: Secret Millionaires Club is a cartoon on The Hub that aims to teach kids about the business of, well, business — specifically, financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and teamwork. The series stars Warren Buffett as himself, or a version of himself who serves as a mentor to a diverse group of enterprising, animated kids. (Sample advice: “Do what you love and work for whom you admire the most, and you’ve given yourself the best chance in life you can.”)

And this Sunday, basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal — a savvy investor who has shares in Google and Tout, a mobile video startup — will stop by the club to give the gang his own business tips. Here’s an exclusive clip of Shaq’s guest appearance, featuring plenty of bball tricks and a sports-loving robot:

Debby Ryan’s titular character will have the home court advantage on tomorrow’s episode of Jessie, which features a guest-starring turn from NBA All-Star Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat.

Bosh didn’t have to stretch much for the role — he’s playing himself, or at least a version of himself who depends on a talismanic pair of lucky socks to get him through games. And either way, Ryan’s got enough Disney kid energy to counterbalance even the stiffest athlete’s screen presence. Check out a clip from the new episode below:

Bravo to highlight tiger moms and helicopter dads in 'Extreme Guide to Parenting'

Tags: , , , TV

Bravo-TVGet ready to meet some real housewives — and househusbands — who march to the beat of their own kooky, neurotic drummers.

Bravo announced today that it has greenlit Extreme Guide to Parenting, a reality series that invites audiences to gape at parents who practice “unique styles of raising their children.”

Sounds a little more TLC than Bravo — though the network’s vice president of development makes a convincing argument for why Parenting should share a home with the Housewives. “Whether you have kids or you’re stuck next to the screaming child on a plane, judging other people’s parenting is a guilty pleasure.  We all love to do it,” he said in a statement. “The series explores all manners of eccentric ways parents raise their kids, and we’ll let the viewer be the judge of how they’re doing.”

I’m Bored fans, rejoice! EW can exclusively reveal that Michael Ian Black is teaming up with Simon & Schuster for two more children’s books.

The writer/comedian/actor extraordinaire, who published his most recent picture book in September, will once again collaborate with artist Debbie Ohi on the first of the two books. Naked! tells the story of a young boy who refuses to wear clothes after his bath (don’t we all?) and runs rampant about the house in all his nude glory, causing untold mayhem. Black previously partnered with Ohi on I’m Bored.

“I’m thrilled to be working again with everybody at S&S Books for Young Readers,” Black said in a statement. “In the spirit of my past books, I will continue striving to ensure that kids learn almost nothing from my works.”

“For four children’s books now, Michael Ian Black has shown that he instinctively knows what kids find funny,” added Justin Chanda, Vice President & Publisher of Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers. “Michael’s humor matched with Debbie’s style and charm has been a dream pairing. I am thrilled to have the team back together with Naked!

Naked! hits shelves in Summer 2014.

'NRA: Practice Range' app aimed at kids?

Tags:

When the National Rifle Association put out an iPhone/iPad app called NRA:  Practice Range on Jan. 13, on the eve of the one-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, it wasn’t surprising that it would cause a considerable amount of outrage and concern. A lot of that had to do with the fact that it was apparently originally rated for ages 4+. The rating has since moved up ages 12+ due to “frequent/intense realistic violence.” The shooting app has incensed many who consider it grossly  insensitive to the victims of the Newtown, Conn. tragedy and their families, while others believe it to be hypocritical given the NRA’s stance on violence in video games as a factor in real-world violence.

The logline on the free app touts it as “delivering one-touch access to the NRA network of news, laws, facts, knowledge, safety tips, educational materials and online resources.” And there is plenty of info there on gun safety, gun news, gun laws, legislation, and hunting season. But there are also three different first-person shooting settings: in an indoor range while firing a pistol at those familiar coffin-shaped targets with a pistol, outdoors where you have an M16, and skeet shooting with a shotgun. You can also buy upgrades in weapons. And the start of each of the games is accompanied by facts and tips  like “NRA programs train over 750,000 gun owners each year,” or “Never use alcohol or drugs before or while shooting.”

This all falls well in line with the NRA belief that education goes hand in hand with the gun rights. And even though the remarkably simple gyroscopic or analog play settings are nothing special, as you shoot at non-human targets, it’s no less disturbing than the hordes of other first-person shooter games out there. But that in itself should mean something. So should anyone be surprised by this app?
