Congresswoman Matsui Stands Up for Social Security

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05), co-chair of the Congressional Seniors Task Force, joined Democratic colleagues in sending a letter to Speaker Boehner reaffirming support for the Social Security program.  The letter clearly states that any proposed cuts to Social Security benefits as part of a deficit reduction package will be met with fierce opposition.

“Those who work hard and play by the rules deserve a dignified and secure retirement,” stated Congresswoman Matsui.  “Social Security is not the cause of our nation’s deficit problem, and the fiscal crisis should not be solved on the backs of Social Security beneficiaries.  My democratic colleagues and I have been, and continue to be, committed to protecting and strengthening this essential program.”

Social Security is a structured, independent, self-financed insurance program, in which worker contributions, not general taxes, finance benefits.  The program provides older Americans with stability and security by offering them a level of guaranteed income.  Social Security is not part of the federal budget, is prohibited from borrowing, and cannot contribute to the federal deficit.
