New business starts are reaching record highs in Kansas.

The state’s newly released business formation report shows 15,008 new-business filings in 2012, surpassing the 13,646 filings in 2011.

This was the first time the state compiled such a list, but officials hope to make it something that is released annually.

The full report is available on the website for the Office of the Secretary of State.

In the Wichita metro area, Sedgwick County had 2,488 new business starts in 2012, followed by 250 in Butler County, 109 in Harvey County and 83 in Sumner County.

Those counties collectively recorded 3,304 new business starts last year, compared with 3,139 in 2011 and 2,816 in 2010.
