Due to difficult financial times, the Aurora Public Library had to close three of seven locations and cut spending by 50 percent in 2010.

Your generous donation will be used to purchase books and materials. Here are some ways you can help support the Library.

Cash/Check Donations: The Library is always in need of your generous donations.  You can donate online, in person at the circulation desk, or by mail. Checks can be made out to Aurora Public Library and sent to Aurora Public Library/Admin, 14949 E. Alameda Parkway, Aurora, CO 80012.  The Library uses your donations to purchase books and other materials for your use.

Books, CDs, and DVDs: The Aurora Public Library encourages, and is happy to accept, donated items that are in good condition at any of the Library’s locations. We do our best to add donated items to the library collection.

Occasionally, however, donated materials are replicas of items already in the collection, or shelving space is full, or for other reasons are not appropriate for the Library’s collection and we are unable to place specific donated items into the collection. Adding donated items manually to the online system and affixing the tags and barcodes is time-and-labor-intensive, and we have extremely limited staff to accomplish these manual tasks, whereas new items purchased from the vendor factory arrive labeled, ready to shelve and records automatically downloaded into our system.

What do we do with donated items the library can’t add to the collection? These donated items go to the local non-profit organization called Friends of the Aurora Public Library to be sold at their used book store (The Book Outlet) on Iliff and Peoria. Their sole mission for 25 years is to provide financial support to the Aurora Public Library. The Friend’s also sell outdated and worn library books. The Library uses the money from the Friends to buy new library books and provide programs, such as the annual youth and teen Summer Reading Program. The Friends is a 100% volunteer organization and, historically, donate around $50,000 a year to the library. You can also donate books directly to the Friends at their bookstore.

Thanks to the wonderful volunteers at the Friends, a win-win situation exists in that the community can purchase books at very low prices, unneeded books are re-used, and needed funding is provided to the library. In fact, some times books are purchased at the Friends and re-donated several times over! What better way to recycle!

MAGAZINES, NEWSPAPERS, TEXT BOOKS, MAPS, EPHEMERA AND ENCYCLOPEDIAS: The library cannot accept the above items except for textbooks and encyclopedias that are less than 3 years old. The Library does not archive news and magazine hard copy print and there is little resale value for these items and handling costs exceed any profits from such sales.

COMPUTERS, FURNITURE and OTHER ITEMS: The library cannot accept computers and most technology items because of specific operating standards, compatibility, maintenance, technical support and networking issues that make the use of such items cost ineffective and sometimes impossible. Furniture and other Items may be accepted on a case by case basis if the specific item is needed in a library.

NOTE: donations to the Aurora Public Library may be tax deductable. Please contact your tax professional.

Buy a Book Online

When you are searching our online catalog for a book, did you know that you actually can buy that book? If we don’t have the book, there are too many holds by other patrons or you just decide you want the book, look for the “Shop and Buy” button below the book cover or title.

When you buy a book through the Library’s online catalog using your credit card, a percentage of the proceeds are returned to the Library through an agreement with the Friends of the Aurora Library and the major vendor that provides books to most retailers and online book sellers. The book will be mailed to your house like any other online book purchase.
