Sponsor Spotlight: Microsoft New England Research & Development Center

Microsoft New England Research Development Center

This year's Northeast PHP Conference will be held again at the Microsoft New England Research & Development Center, affectionately referred to as the NERD. We're excited to be holding the event here again having been voted the number one event for 2012 at the NERD. The NERD is a fabulous event venue and the best part is that Microsoft makes the space available to us for free! This has helped us to keep the ticket prices affordable.

Located in Kendall Square, the NERD is a catalyst for innovation throughout the region. The NERD has done a tremendous job of supporting the local technology community. Last year alone the NERD hosted over 700 events including Boston PHP meetups. Some upcoming events at the NERD include:

  • Boston I/O (9/7/2013): Boston I/O is a free 1-day conference for approximately 300 high school and college students. Boston I/O helps transition students from school to the local startup culture by offering hard skills as well as solid, specific advice for emerging tech entreprenuers and technologists.
  • HACKFit Boston 2013 (9/20/2013 - 9/22/2013): HACKFit events are weekend-long competitions designed by technologists and fitness gurus to test your all-around hacking skills, true grit, and camaraderie.
  • zCon East (10/21/2013 - 10/22/2013): The zSpace Developers Conference is an educational environment that stimulates communication and collaboration among developers of 3D applications, hardware and content who are interested in immersive, lifelike and interactive technologies.

See you at the NERD for the Northeast PHP Conference!

Sponsor Spotlight: Engine Yard

We're excited to have Engine Yard as a sponsor for the Northeast PHP Conference again for the second year in a row. Engine Yard's support has made it possible for us to host a Saturday evening party for all attendees. Thank you Engine Yard!

Engine Yard is a leading Platform as a Service empowering developers to plan, build, deploy and manage applications in the cloud. But rather than talk about Engine Yard's product offering, I'd like talk about a great initiative that Engine Yard has just announced. This initiative is called Prompt and the goal is start a conversation about mental health in the technology industry. Engine Yard is encouraging conferences to invite a mental health speaker to raise awareness of the issue and create a more open dialogue and support network.

Engine Yard describes their motivation behind this initiative:

"Our <product / service / software> makes developers lives easier". How often have you heard that phrase? It’s often used by companies that make tools for developers. We’ve said it ourselves, here at Engine Yard.

The real meaning of that phrase, however, is "we make developers work lives easier".

Prompt is an effort to actually try to help improve the lives of developers, especially those who are affected in any way by things like depression, anxiety, or any other mental illness.

Prompt was started by Eamon Leonard and John Dalton of Engine Yard, in collaboration with Ed Finkler and Greg Baugues.

Sponsor Spotlight: GitHub

GitHubWe're happy to introduce GitHub as a sponsor for this year's Northeast PHP Conference! In case you've been living under a rock and aren't familiar with GitHub, here is how GitHub describes themselves:

GitHub is the best place to share code with friends, co-workers, classmates, and complete strangers. Over three million people use GitHub to build amazing things together.

Founded in 2008, GitHub is now the largest code host in the world. The source code for the PHP interpreter is mirrored on GitHub and almost every major PHP framework is hosted on GitHub, including (listed in order of most watched):

To celebrate GitHub's sponsorship, we will be serving Octocat cupcakes during the conference!

How did you get into PHP?

I am always amazed at what people tell me when I ask this question. Check out what some of our ticket holders said when asked this question...

"By accident :)  Was going into medicine and ended up writing some programs in PHP, absolutely loved it, and haven't looked back since.  After writing code for 10+ years I recently accepted a Developer Advocate position with Constant Contact where I have a chance to give back even more, and well, we'll see where the road leads :)"

"From being a web app designer in a PHP shop. I taught myself HTML/CSS, then PHP/MySQL. Then OO JS. Now I'm a full time full-stack developer."

"I got into programming when I was about 11.  I wrote a "United Federation of Planets" application to store the info off the cards that came with our Star Trek figures. (I even had an ASCSI UFP logo)   I currently travel around writing php code for mid to large enterprises.  In the next couple of years I hope to move to Europe and continue to code."

"I got into web development by playing around on BBSes in the early 90s, and later hacking Perl CGI on my first shell account."

"I picked "Intro to Digital Media" randomly from a course catalog because I had no idea what it was. I loved how broad and diverse it was"

    "It's a long, backwards story!"

"My dad suggested computer science after letting me know I was too dumb to be an astronaut. Currently Chief Architect at Lucid Software."

    "Needed to get something done."

"Self taught and it took me all over the world. I plan to keep on going :)"

"What's next? Converting juggling into electronic music using gesture recognition!"
