MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS
January 16, 2013
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for
All Urban Consumers was unchanged in December after
decreasing 0.3 percent in November. The index for all items
less food and energy rose 0.1 percent in December, the same
increase as in November.

Wages and salaries rose 0.3 percent and benefit costs rose 0.8 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from
June to September 2012. Over the year, compensation rose 2.0 percent, wages and salaries 1.7 percent, and benefits
2.6 percent.

Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 155,000 in December, and the
unemployment rate was unchanged at 7.8 percent. Employment increased
in health care, food services and drinking places, construction, and
manufacturing.

The Producer Price Index for finished goods declined 0.2 percent in December. Prices for
finished goods fell 0.8 percent in November and 0.2 percent in October. Prices for finished
goods less foods and energy advanced 0.1 percent in December.

Productivity increased 2.9 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the third quarter of 2012; unit labor costs fell
1.9 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity fell 0.7 percent and unit labor costs
increased 3.2 percent.

Real average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent in December, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3 percent and the CPI-U was unchanged. Real average weekly earnings rose 0.6 percent over the month.

The price index for U.S. imports edged down 0.1 percent in December, after declining
0.8 percent the previous month. Falling fuel and nonfuel prices each contributed to the
December decrease. U.S. export prices also fell 0.1 percent in December following a 0.7
percent drop in November.
